iOS 6 maps app shown in mock

We’ve heard about a new maps app built into iOS 6 for a while, and recently BGR stated that they received some exclusive photos showing this change is coming soon. Google maps are pretty good but Apple likes to do their own thing, especially if they can put a twist on current technology, and this looks to be the case as seen in the photos here.

Details are still thin – what we know so far is that the new Maps app includes a revamped UI, and a new silver navigation bar, which also hints towards iOS 6 become more silver as a whole. Other features include a new floating locate me button, and the 3D mode that obviously makes use of a recent Apple acquisition, C3 Technologies, which allows for a slick 3D mapping mode that you access via the lower right of a map by peeling it back.

What do you think of Apple’s new Maps app, and do you think this is a wise move stepping away from the Google partnership? It’s worth pointing out that BGR state the photos they have are mocks from their source, although the features are rumored to be spot on.

To see how good the mapping is from C3 Technologies we’ve included a video demo below, which had been uploaded to YouTube a year ago and shows a 3D map of Oslo, the capital of Norway. If this is the technology Apple have in their hands now, bearing in mind this was a year ago, then the new Apple maps are going to be pretty cool.
